Armed with all of this knowledge, I picked Octopus bimaculoides as the species to study and raise. Affectionately known as bimacs, these medium-size octopuses reside in southern California coastal mudflats and tidal pools. Most octopuses are nocturnal, but these are active during the day. They have two ocelli (eye spots) and are often called the two-spot octopuses.

The culinary world, especially seafood restaurants and specialty food brands, can embrace the octopus for its direct connection to the ocean's bounty. The octopus in such logos can represent freshness, exotic flavors, and a culinary adventure. For businesses or organizations connected to the ocean, such as marine conservation groups, aquariums, or water sports companies, an octopus logo is a natural fit. It not only directly relates to their aquatic realm but also symbolizes the diversity and wonder of marine life.

Whether you go for realistic ocean blues or more imaginative hues, color can breathe life into your ink. Fine lines can make your octopus tattoo look crisp and elegant. This style is great for those who want detail but prefer a less in-your-face approach. The fine line technique highlights the octopus’s intricate features without overwhelming the eye.

A heavy duty, busy octopus calf tattoo (they are almost always orange, was there a discount on this color ink?), again using Irezumi elements to help scale the art work. This piece lacks the clarity of some others in this piece, but the age of the work in this image may be a factor – this piece was completed a long time ago. One area i’d touch up is the beast’s eyes – they could do with some bright yellow or burnished gold fills to make them stand out in the image center. The technical effects in this sea creature are clean and sharp.

Dark shading adds an eerie and mysterious vibe to your octopus tattoo. If you’re looking to add some drama and depth, dark shading techniques can make your ink look almost three-dimensional. If you’re not into the bells and whistles, a simple octopus tattoo could be just your speed. A minimal design on the arm keeps it clean and straightforward, focusing on the octopus’s essential features.
